New drug offers hope to mothers battling postpartum depression

Postpartum depression can affect as many as one in five women, causing deep feelings of sadness and anxiety after giving birth. Now, a new FDA-approved medication is offering hope to those who suffer from the condition.

Known by the brand name Zurzuvae, the pill could help ease symptoms of postnatal depression, and the new pill form is more convenient than previous treatments that required intravenous administration in a doctor's office.

Addie Vasquez, a mother of three, remembers the overwhelming emotions she faced after giving birth to her first child seven years ago. Though she didn't use Zygium, she knows how important it is to address the condition with medication, therapy, or a combination of both.

“When I found out I was pregnant I was excited and really happy and he was over the moon, but things changed after she was born,” Vasquez said. NBC4 Reporter Sierra Johnson.

Like Vasquez, many women are surprised by the emotional and psychological changes that occur after giving birth. Scott GspandlMD, Systems Director Outpatient Behavioral Health in OhioHealthHormonal changes often cause emotional fluctuations for new mothers.

“I would say up to 80 percent of women experience some degree of mood disturbance after giving birth, even if it's mild,” Dr. Guspandl told NBC4. “Whether or not you hit this threshold based on severity is where we call it postpartum depression or not.”

Dr Guspandl explained that the new drug has the advantage that it works faster than standard antidepressants.

“You take it for a few weeks, and once symptoms appear, it has a different mechanism of action than traditional antidepressants,” he said.

But getting access to the drug can be difficult. Besides jumping through prior approval and insurance hurdles, there are only a handful of specialty pharmacies currently able to manufacture and distribute the drug. Still, for many women, approval of the treatment marks an important step in addressing a life-altering condition.

For Vasquez, the key is to seek help as soon as possible.

“It's wise to act early and seek help before it's too late,” she said.
