Colorado doctor says there's still a lot we don't know about ovarian cancer

Laboratory A Denver, Colorado, laboratory is transforming the way women find out if they have ovarian cancer. In a University of Alberta study, researchers hope that a drug commonly used to treat congestive heart failure may hold promise as an effective treatment for rare, aggressive endometrial cancer. Unfortunately, however, there is no way to prevent gynecological cancers.

Due to the growing need to raise awareness about cervical, ovarian, uterine/endometrial, vaginal and vulvar cancer, September has been designated as Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month.

Both ovarian and endometrial cancers are fairly common — the National Cancer Institute expects more than 100,000 women to be diagnosed this year — and if you have a family history of cancer, you're more likely to get it.

“One of the causes of both endometrial and ovarian cancer is a genetic predisposition,” says Dr. Susan Reed, a gynecologic oncologist at Skyridge Medical Center. “All patients with ovarian cancer are tested for genetic causes. [are] “If there are family members who may need additional testing, or if the patient is predisposed to other cancers, it can put them on track to prevent those other cancers.”

Genetic factors aside, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help prevent endometrial cancer, Reid says: “Endometrial cancer also tends to develop as a result of exposure to excess estrogen, which means that patients who are obese or have insulin resistance are also at increased risk.”

Managing a healthy weight and body fat percentage is important, she added.

Pap tests can't detect cancers other than cervical cancer, Reid said, so gynecologic cancer symptoms are usually diagnosed at an advanced stage.

“When it comes to ovarian cancer, we don't know much about how to prevent it,” she says.

For some women, early detection can lead to other complications.

“For patients with early-stage onset of these cancers, unfortunately, they may need surgery that takes away their fertility. We know that there are some associations between infertility and some of these cancers, but it's multifactorial, and at this point we don't know exactly what those associations are,” Reed said.
