Los Angeles area sees rise in dengue fever cases caused by local mosquito bites
Los Angeles — Health officials warned Wednesday that one year after the first dengue case was reported in California, dengue cases are on the rise in the Los Angeles area among people who have not traveled outside the continental U.S.
Public health officials say at least three people have been suspected to have contracted dengue fever from mosquito bites this month in the Baldwin Park neighborhood east of downtown Los Angeles.
“This is an unprecedented outbreak of localized dengue transmission in an area that has never before been affected by mosquito transmission of dengue,” said Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer.

Dengue fever is often transmitted in tropical regions by the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are common in Los Angeles County but had no known local cases until last year. Reported in Pasadena and Long Beach.
Ayman Harray, head of the ministry's vector-borne diseases unit, said all previous cases in California had been linked to people who had traveled to areas where dengue is commonly spread, such as Latin America.
So far this year, Los Angeles County has reported 82 such cases in people returning from travel, and California as a whole has 148 cases, Harray said.
Dengue can cause high fever, rash, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, and bone and joint pain. About one in four infected people develop symptoms, which usually appear within five to seven days of being bitten by a dengue-carrying mosquito. Of those with symptoms, one in 20 develops severe dengue, which can cause severe bleeding and can be life-threatening.
Public health officials will visit homes within 150 meters (492 feet) of the person bitten — the typical flying range of virus-carrying mosquitoes, Ferrer said.
Ferrer encouraged people to use insect repellent and eliminate standing water around the home where mosquitoes can breed.
Officials are testing mosquitoes and so far have found no dengue-infected mosquitoes in the San Gabriel Valley.
