BOSTON — A new study shows that older people are more likely to be popular Cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Statins, such as atorvastatin, sold under the brand name Lipitor, are typically recommended for adults over 40 who have risk factors for heart disease, but older adults tend to be less likely to take statins than middle-aged adults. Perhaps as people get older, they don't want to continue taking large amounts of pills and so stop taking statins to simplify their medication regimens.

This new study reveals that it may not be to their advantage. University of Oxford Lifetime statin use in men and women aged 70 years and older, regardless of whether they have a history of cardiovascular disease, was found to be cost-effective and help older people live longer, healthier lives.
