New measures introduced to enable rapid response to bluetongue
New powers have been introduced by the Isle of Man Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to allow a rapid response to the bluetongue virus.
The move comes as the virus continues to spread in the UK, causing infertility, reproductive problems and even death in animals.
The measures, which allow for export restrictions, the implementation of vaccination protocols, the enforcement of symptom reporting requirements and the establishment of facility-controlled areas, came into effect on Tuesday.
Chief veterinary officer Amy Beckett said this would allow “rapid and immediate action” in response to any potential threats, helping to curb the spread of infection.
Animals susceptible to the virus are ruminants, which include cattle, sheep, goats and deer.
However, the ministry said bluetongue does not affect human health or food safety and animal products are safe to consume.
