After months of declines, overdose deaths continue to fall to lowest level in three years, CDC says
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Drug overdose deaths have continued to fall for months, dropping to their lowest level in three years. Latest CDC data.
Some say this is an encouraging trend, but researchers say more data and studies are needed to learn more about why this is happening.
“Having naloxone widely available is a big thing,” Chandler-Picotte said. “Overall, education is working. Of course, resources need more funding, but overall, it's working.”
Over the past 20 years, Over 37,000 North Carolinians Chandler Picotte almost became one of those people who lost their lives to a drug overdose, but now he's helping others find recovery as North Carolina sees a 20% drop in fatal drug overdoses.
“North Carolina is taking this seriously,” Picotte said. “We could do more, but we're certainly doing something.”
Freda McDonald, a Wake County mother who moved beyond grief to take action after her son died of a drug overdose in 2016, said the news she heard while answering calls on a recovery helpline Thursday was exciting.

“It's really encouraging,” McDonald said. “When my son died from fentanyl in 2016, the number of deaths that year was 67,000, and it's doubled since then. I was involved in reporting, so it's really encouraging to see that, overall, we're moving in the right direction.”
Collin Miller, a community liaison for the Opioid Data Lab team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said the decline could be due to a combination of factors, including the use of other street drugs that contain the chemical xylazine, which is a harmful contaminant but poses a lower overdose risk than fentanyl or heroin, Miller said.
“It's good that this is happening, but in a way it's bad,” Miller said. “We're still seeing a lot of deaths, and we don't know why this is happening, so unless we do a thorough investigation into what's going on and find out exactly why these numbers are going down, it's going to be hard to repeat.”
Other states that saw the largest declines in overdose deaths were Nebraska, Vermont, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Miller said the decline has been especially large on the East Coast.
“The good thing is that deaths are going down,” Miller said, “but they're still very high. Overdose numbers are still approaching six figures.”
MacDonald said preliminary data suggests the trend is continuing, but that more work is needed to improve addiction treatment and health services.
“We're seeing an increase in calls from people struggling with methamphetamine, and a lot of them are alcohol-related,” McDonald said. “The problem is, there are so many people struggling and so few resources. Finding the right places to go is the biggest challenge of all.”
