This year's allergy season is expected to be tough. Here's what you can do to ease it.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO/CBS Newspath/WKRC) – Allergy season is fast approaching and this year is expected to be especially tough. One in four people suffer from seasonal allergies every year, and this year's season is expected to be especially tough.
Allergy sufferer Debbie Blotz described her symptoms as “sneezing, watery, itchy eyes.”
Andy Mitchell, another allergy sufferer, added: “I get a runny nose, stuffy nose and a bit of an itchy neck.”
Allergist Dr. Pramod Kelkar of Allergy Medicine at Allina Health Woodbury explains that fall allergies are primarily caused by ragweed. “Many people suffer from ragweed allergies, which can cause nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, watery and bloodshot eyes, and even asthma,” he said.
Dr. Kelker pointed out that summer weather is contributing to the severity of this fall's allergy season: “I know we've had a lot of rain, but does that mean more allergies? Yes, because then you get a double whammy of ragweed and mold,” he said.
She also said that tasks like raking leaves could be particularly irritating this year. “Some people may take an over-the-counter antihistamine such as Allegra, Zyrtec or Claritin before mowing the lawn or raking leaves. They may wear a mask, and most importantly, shower after working in the yard or raking,” Dr. Kelkar advised.
To prevent allergies, Dr. Kelkar recommends daily sinus irrigation, using a neti pot, and taking a nightly shower to wash away allergens.
Doctors advise seeing your family doctor if over-the-counter medications don't alleviate your symptoms, and if that doesn't work, you may need to see a specialist or allergist, as treatments such as allergy shots may be an option.
