Cook County residents remain “hopeful” about getting vaccinated amid statewide measles outbreak
In May 2024, the Minnesota Department of Health declared a measles outbreak. Most cases were According to MDH: The outbreak has been concentrated in the Twin Cities area and has occurred among unvaccinated people. An outbreak was declared after about 30 cases, but MDA reports that more than 50 cases have been reported so far in 2024.
Dr. Alexis Hillman with Sawtooth Mountain Clinic told WTIP that while the numbers may not be large, they are significant. Dr. Hillman said most people recover from measles, but there is a risk of long-term effects, including encephalitis (brain swelling) and infertility. Measles is most common in children, and in this outbreak, the MDH report says, nearly half of the cases are in children between the ages of 1 and 5.
Hillman added that the risk to that population has increased significantly because an increasing number of parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children. “Unlike COVID-19, which appears to be becoming less virulent over time, measles is still endemic, like it's everywhere, whereas measles is not. So we're really concerned about measles getting into populations that are choosing not to vaccinate and spreading like wildfire,” he said.
Hillman doesn't seem too worried about her patients. She said Cook County residents are “excited about the vaccine.” High vaccination rates among residents contribute to “herd immunity,” helping to protect those who can't or choose not to get vaccinated, Hillman said.
But Hillman said some patients' records aren't missing vaccinations. The vaccines that are most frequently missed are for human papillomavirus (HPV) and meningococcal meningitis, Hillman said. Hillman stressed that both are important: the HPV vaccine can prevent cancer, and the meningococcal meningitis vaccine can be lifesaving for people attending college, enlisting in the military, or living in other highly densely populated housing.
Hillman said patients or their parents should contact the clinic if they are looking for information on how to refill missed vaccines. He added that 2024 flu shots and COVID vaccines are currently available at the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic. A series of community vaccination events will be held specifically for flu and COVID vaccinations, and appointments can be made for other missed vaccines.
