Formal education is important for lifelong cognitive function
Spending time on childhood and early adult education expands career opportunities and provides progressively higher salaries. It also brings certain benefits to your health and longevity.
New analysis published in the journal Psychology in the public interest (PSPI), however, does not reduce the rate of cognitive decline with age, although broader formal education obviates the more obvious signs of age-related cognitive impairment. I’m clear. Instead, more advanced people at school, on average, achieve higher levels of cognitive function in early and mid adult adults. As such, the early effects of cognitive aging are less obvious at first and the most serious disorders appear later than they would otherwise.
The total amount of formal education that people receive is related to the average level of cognitive function throughout adulthood. However, it is less related to the rate of cognitive decline with aging. “
Elliot M. Tucker-Drob, Researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, Co-author of thesis
This conclusion refutes the long-standing hypothesis that formal education from childhood to early adulthood significantly protects against cognitive aging. Instead, the authors conclude that individuals more advanced in school tend to decline from higher peak levels of cognitive function. Therefore, the author may experience a longer period of cognitive impairment before falling below what he calls the “functional threshold”, the point at which cognitive decline becomes so apparent that it interferes with daily activities. ..
“Individuals have different rates of cognitive decline with age, but these individual differences do not correlate well with education achievement,” said lead author Martin Levden, formerly at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Stockholm University, now Gothenburg University.
For their study, the researchers looked at data from dozens of previous meta-analyses and cohort studies conducted over the last 20 years. The new PSPI report assesses the conclusions from these previous studies to better understand how educational background influences levels and changes in cognitive function in aging and dementia.
While some uncertainties remain after the analysis, the broader picture of how education is associated with cognitive aging is very clear. Throughout adulthood, cognitive function in people with higher years of school is, on average, higher than that in people with fewer years of school.
This review highlights the importance of formal education for cognitive development during childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. According to researchers, childhood education has important implications for the well-being of individuals and societies not only during employment, but throughout life, including old age. “This message may be of particular relevance to the government in deciding whether, when, and how to restart schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. It can bring results over the years,” Tucker Drobb said.
The authors found that improving conditions shaping development during the first decades of life has great potential to improve cognitive performance in early adulthood and reduce the public health burden associated with cognitive aging and dementia. Concludes that
