Christchurch’s retirement village has been blocked after many residents begin to show signs of respiratory illness.

General manager John Amesbury said there were “a large number of residents” with flu-like symptoms.
“We are following the usual practice of isolating people to prevent further infections,” he said.

One of the village chiefs, Warren Grassy, said “nothing harmful” about what happened.
“It’s just a precautionary issue, and we have full confidence in management to do the right thing,” Glassey said.
“This issue is just a precautionary measure to minimize the occasional invasion of infectious diseases, chest infections, and other viruses into nursing homes and to ensure the health and safety of the population.”
