Families affected by sickle cell disease work to help other affected families
BALTIMORE — September is National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month.
It's time to be used to raise awareness about the disease.
WMAR-2 News spoke with Baltimore families directly affected by the disease.
They are on a mission to help families just like theirs.
Nikia Vaughn is executive director of the Maryland Sickle Cell Association.
The issue is close to home for her, as both her husband and daughter have sickle cell disease.
Nikia's daughter, Simone Vaughn, is a seventh-grader. She has to take hydroxyurea, a medication that helps treat sickle cell disease, every day.
“When I was younger I had to take the liquid but it tasted bad so I switched to tablets when I was 11,” Simone said.
But Simone is not alone: Her father, Charmon Vaughn, also has sickle cell disease, and she says her years growing up were difficult.
“My mother was very protective and didn't allow me to do the things that my other friends were doing,” Charmon said.
Now, as an adult, he must undergo exchange transfusions every four to six weeks.
“An exchange transfusion is generally like an oil change for a car. Basically, you take out blood and give red blood cells in.”
Nikia is the caregiver for both her husband and daughter.
“As she transitions, it can be difficult for Simone to know that the pain may increase and change over the years,” Nikia says.
Nikia is also an advocate: as Executive Director of the Maryland Sickle Cell Association, she works to provide education and support to families affected by sickle cell disease.
“Knowing and understanding more about sickle cell disease really helps us understand that there are more treatments, more funding, and the more people who understand what sickle cell disease is, the greater the outcomes will be,” Nikia said.
Charmon has a message for those diagnosed with sickle cell disease.
“If you take care of yourself, you can get through this disease and continue to live a healthy life,” Charmon said.
Nikia stressed that blood donations are crucial. She said it was important to have the same blood type stored in banks to combat blood shortages.
