Avian flu cases on the rise among California dairy farmers

Reports of H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks at California dairy farms continue to grow as the nation's largest milk producer scrambles to contain the spread.
Officials reported Monday that the number of infected dairy cows in the Central Valley had doubled over the weekend. It increased from 17 to 34.
A spokesman for the California Department of Food and Agriculture said they expect more cases to be announced in the coming days and weeks as testing continues.
With about 1,100 dairy farms in California, 90 percent of them in the San Joaquin Valley, industry officials say the concerns are obvious. When an outbreak occurs, milk production at an affected dairy is halted. Not only are infected cows quarantined, but nearby dairy farms also have to undergo special testing.
“Dairy farmers are really concerned about the virus and feel like it's out of control,” said Anja Raudabaugh, CEO of Western United Dairies, a trade group representing California dairy farmers, adding that the industry would like to see a cow vaccine developed that “protects the cow” and complies with trade agreements.
The threat to humans is considered low, but infectious disease experts are concerned that the longer the virus remains on dairy farms, the greater the chance it will mix with human viruses and pose a greater risk to humans.
State and federal health officials say milk is safe to drink as long as it's pasteurized.
USDA spokesman Steve Lyle said the department's call for testing of dairy farms within six miles of infected herds and those that share personnel or equipment with infected herds has allowed officials to find infected dairy farms “during the incubation period, just before or around the time clinical signs appear.”
The USDA is working to develop a vaccine for cattle against avian flu, but the statement noted that this does not mean efforts to contain the virus have failed.
“Pursuit of a cattle vaccine does not mean that biosecurity measures have failed,” the agency said in a prepared statement, “nor does it mean that USDA believes the virus will continue to exist in the future. Vaccine development is part of an overall strategy that includes enhanced biosecurity measures to contain the virus and mitigate its spread.”
The statement added that while a vaccine could help eliminate the virus from the country's dairy cows, it is only one tool.
“We will continue to take all possible measures, including biosecurity and mandatory testing of dairy cattle moving across state borders,” the statement said.
It is still unclear how the virus entered the state, but genetic sequencing has shown it is similar to those found in infected cattle in other states, suggesting it did not come from wild birds.
It's unclear how the disease will affect the state's milk production, but Raudabhau said it won't affect milk prices.
“Dairy is the 'showcase' item in grocery stores,” she said, adding that dairy is often the main purchase driver for other items in the store.
