Women are dying 'unnecessarily' because of 'undertreated' cardiovascular disease, experts say | UK News
Experts say heart disease is the “number one cause of death among women”, but cases are being “neglected” and more needs to be done to stop “preventable” deaths.
A leading group of cardiologists has warned that the “misconception” that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a “man's disease” is contributing to CVD cases in women being “under-recognised and under-treated”.
Writing in the journal Heart, the researchers said that because most heart disease is “preventable”, more work was needed “to ensure equity in care for women with CVD”.
Lead author Professor Vijay Kunadian said: “Heart disease, and particularly coronary artery disease, is the number one cause of death in women in the UK and worldwide.”
“Yet to this day, women are still having their symptoms ignored, being told there is nothing wrong with them, or being given other treatments when in fact they may be suffering from heart disease.”
Prof Knadian said statistics showed women were receiving less treatment and were more likely to die after heart attacks.
“We can no longer ignore this – it's time to take action,” he said, adding that if women received the right treatment “it could save their lives”.
A group of 33 experts from across the UK wrote in the medical journal Heart that more than 3.6 million women in the country currently have ischaemic heart disease (also known as coronary heart disease) and one in 14 women will die from the disease.

“Our findings suggest that the misconception that CVD is a 'man's disease' contributes to the under-recognition and under-treatment of CVD in women,” the group, which is part of the British Cardiovascular Society, said.
They noted a “disparity” between men and women when it comes to diagnosis and treatment, with women less likely to receive certain treatments and diagnostic tests.
She added that women “often receive less treatment and have poorer outcomes.”
The group also highlighted that women are “underrepresented” in clinical research into cardiovascular disease.
The report set out recommendations aimed at “saving the many women in the UK and around the world who die unnecessarily from preventable diseases”.
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: “It's clear that women's health has been neglected in the failing NHS we inherited.”
“This Government will reform the NHS and prioritise women's health to ensure women's voices are heard.”
“Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death for both men and women in the country, which is why the government will be carrying out up to 130,000 extra health checks in workplaces across the country to detect this and other diseases at an early stage.”
