Christchurch’s Retirement Village is Partially Blocked While Residents View Covid-19 Swabs

The Village Palms Retirement Village on Shirley Road in Christchurch is closed.
Christchurch’s retired village has been partially blocked after many residents began to show signs of respiratory illness.
Several residents of The Village Palms Retirement Village in Shirley were disinfected with Covid-19 as a precautionary measure, but are believed to be very unlikely to have the virus.
On Tuesday, the resident’s family was notified of the blockade.
Dr. Sheryl Brunton, Health Care Officer at Canterbury, confirmed that the GP was taking a cotton swab.
Residents had mild respiratory symptoms and were being tested for other respiratory viruses, she said.

“This is in line with the Ministry of Health’s current advice on testing,” Brunton said.
“There is currently no community transmission of Covid-19, so this outbreak is unlikely to be the cause of anything other than normal seasonal respiratory disease.”
General manager John Amesbury said the village had a “large number of people” with flu-like symptoms.
“We follow normal practices to isolate the population to prevent further infections,” he said.
“This is the normal cold and flu season – [there is] There is nothing to suggest that the population has more than the usual flu. It’s just standard practice, standard protocol. “
One of the village chiefs, Warren Grassy, said “nothing to worry about” what happened.
