Whooping cough cases on the rise in Tennessee, putting young people at risk
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Tennessee, with the number of cases so far this year more than double the number of cases in the entire year last year.
Margaret Beagle, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said she's doing all she can to keep her kids from getting sick.
“A lot of hand washing, a lot of reminders about hand washing, a lot of hand washing,” Beagle said. “I can't tell you the amount of hand washing. A lot of sanitizing. A lot of hygiene lessons like how to wipe your nose with a tissue and sneeze into your elbow.”
She said once someone gets sick, it's only a matter of time. “Some years we've had to close entire classes because a significant percentage of the kids had whooping cough, the flu, strep, etc. So I think if we're careful in the beginning, we can prevent the spread of germs.”
The Metropolitan Public Health Department says prevention is key when it comes to respiratory illnesses such as whooping cough, a contagious bacterial disease.
Last year, there were 52 cases of whooping cough in Tennessee. So far this year, there have already been 189 cases.
“There are a number of factors. We know that people have been visiting healthcare providers less during the pandemic, which has led to fewer vaccinations for adults and children. People have also been more isolated during that time,” said the department's interim director, Joanna Shokaikai.
The agency said it is seeing the same phenomenon across the country, “It's on the rise among young people and adults. Fortunately, we have antibiotics to treat it, but even better, we have a vaccine.”
Prevention alone may not be enough, and Beagle and the health department agree that people should try to stay home if they are sick.
“When my kids were sick, I kept them home as much as possible. I know it's hard on working families, but we just try to keep them home and try to keep the spread down,” Beagle said.
