Mandy Wilk, a Minnesota woman, is recovering from stage 4 cancer after undergoing a double lung transplant at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago.
CHICAGO (WLS) — Doctors in Chicago performed a rare and difficult surgery to save the life of a woman with stage 4 cancer.
You may not know it, but Mandy Wilk is three months removed from a double lung transplant, in what the patient and her doctors at Northwestern Medicine are calling a medical breakthrough.

“It's amazing,” Wilk said. “I still can't believe it.”
Wilk survived stage 4 colon cancer, but the cancer had spread to his liver and traditional treatments were ineffective.
Mandy's determination knows no bounds, and when other hospitals told her there was nothing more they could do, she refused to accept that answer.

“Every time we get together for Christmas or any holiday, I wonder, 'Is this the last time?'” Wilk said.
The elementary school teacher from Bloomington, Minnesota, grew up in the suburbs and often traveled to Chicago for her husband's job.
After undergoing liver surgery in Chicago, she was referred to Northwestern Medicine's DREAM Program, which gives cancer patients one last chance at a lung transplant.
“We were able to remove all the cancer cells from her lungs and implant two new lungs,” said Ankit Bharat, M.D., chief of thoracic surgery at Northwestern Medicine. “She's been out of surgery for more than three months, and all the tests we have available, including DNA testing in her blood, show no signs of cancer remaining in her body.”

Wilk's case was the first double lung transplant through the Dream Program, which was started after she succumbed to colon cancer. Her eight-year-old dream of ringing a bell to signify her cancer-free status came true on June 10.
“Mandy's determination knows no bounds,” says Dr. Katherine Myers, a pulmonologist at Northwestern Medicine. “She never said no, even when other hospitals told her there was nothing more they could do.”
Wilk hopes that other patients can benefit from this program and live cancer-free lives.
“When something goes wrong, you have to take it as a given,” Wilk said. “If I did, I wouldn't be sitting here today. So I think it's really important for people to explore other opportunities.”
