Minnesota reports rare death from rabies
Minneapolis — The state health department announced Friday that a Minnesota resident who came into contact with a bat in July died from rabies.
The person's death was a rare event because fewer than 10 people die from rabies each year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The person is over 65 years old and was exposed to bats in western Minnesota in July, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
CDC officials confirmed on September 20 that the animal had been diagnosed with rabies at a lab in Atlanta. The state health department said in a news release that it is working to assess whether more people have been exposed to the disease, but said there is no ongoing risk to the public.
Officials said the deaths prompted a recommendation for the public to avoid contact with bats. Bat teeth are so small that a bite cannot be felt and may even leave a noticeable mark.
