Los Angeles County confirms first Weil Nile virus death of the year – NBC Los Angeles
Public health officials on Friday confirmed the year's first death from West Nile virus.
A San Fernando Valley resident was hospitalized with the mosquito-borne disease and later died from a neurological illness, officials said.
“This tragic loss highlights the serious health risks posed by mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus and dengue fever,” said Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis.
Health officials say West Nile virus is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Symptoms may include fever, muscle pain, and fatigue. People over the age of 50 with health problems are at higher risk of developing serious illnesses such as meningitis, encephalitis, and quadriplegia.
Davis said people can take steps to reduce their risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
