A Swedish study finds that people with mental illnesses who are not receiving drug treatment are less likely to be vaccinated against the new coronavirus infection.
Led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, Nature Communications. However, Swedish registry data reveals that people with mental illness who are not on medication have lower levels of vaccination.
The researchers used data from seven studies (totaling just over 325,000 people) conducted in five countries (Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Estonia and Scotland) as part of the COVIDMENT consortium, and data from more than 8 million people. We analyzed Swedish registration data including individuals.
A pooled analysis from the COVIDMENT cohort showed that 85 per cent of individuals had received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine (through September 30, 2021). There were no statistically significant differences in vaccination levels between those with and without a diagnosis of mental illness or symptoms of anxiety or depression.
Lead author Mary Barker, postdoctoral fellow at Karolinska Institutet's Institute of Environmental Medicine, said: “High vaccination rates among most people with mental illness indicate that the COVID-19 vaccination campaign has been successful. “It shows that we are doing well.”
However, Swedish registry data revealed that people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and are not prescribed medication to treat it are 9% less likely to receive a first dose of the vaccine. Additionally, people with substance use disorders were 16% less likely to receive the vaccine.
“Further research is needed to explore the reasons behind these associations in order to improve current and future vaccination strategies and ultimately ensure equitable protection against infectious diseases.” Barker says. “People with mental illnesses are at higher risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19, so high vaccination rates are particularly important for this group.”
