Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet

In the Caribbean, the onset of breastfeeding within an hour of giving birth is quite high. However, it is low to give breastfeeding exclusively for 6 months continuously, about 39%. The benefits of breastfeeding are tremendous for both mothers and babies. Specially designed to meet the health needs of nursing babies, breast milk provides protection against infections and illnesses such as ear infections, diarrhea and pneumonia.

To reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and other non-communicable diseases (NCD) later in life, mothers should feed their babies breast milk alone for the first 6 months of life. Ending breastfeeding early and introducing other foods into your baby’s diet at the wrong time is one of the biggest threats to your child’s health.

Breastfeeding provides a healthy, pollution-free, sustainable and natural source of nutrition and also provides a great way for mothers to bond with their babies. Much cheaper than man-made products, and when properly positioned and installed, your baby will stop feeding when satisfied and will have little waste. Breastfeeding also has health benefits for the mother. Breastfeeding mothers have a lower incidence of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.

This year, World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated from August 1st to 7th with the theme “Supporting Breastfeeding for a Healthy Planet”. This is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Health and Welfare. This theme focuses on the impact of infant feeding on the environment in this era of climate change and the importance of promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding to stay healthy.

This is in line with the Caribbean Public Health Department’s life course approach for the prevention of NCD, where breastfeeding is an important factor. The Caribbean Public Health Authority (CARPHA) encourages mothers to consider breastfeeding as the best method for breastfeeding the baby from the first hour of birth to at least 6 months after delivery.

During this COVID-19 pandemic, it’s natural for new and pregnant mothers to worry about breastfeeding, breastfeeding, and viral infections of their babies. So far, there is no evidence of the presence of COVID-19 in breast milk or breast milk-mediated infection. Because of the benefits of breastfeeding and breastfeeding, and the negative consequences of stopping it, mothers are encouraged to continue breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding continues to protect babies from infant death and morbidity beyond infancy through the long-term transmission of colostrum and other anti-infective properties of breast milk as well as immune and memory abilities. Standard feeding guidelines should continue with appropriate precautions for infection, prevention, and control.
