Rwanda limits size of funerals as infection spreads
Rwandan authorities are restricting the size of funerals for victims of the Marburg virus in an effort to curb the spread of the highly contagious disease.
Eight people have died in Rwanda's first virus outbreak, the country's health ministry confirmed on Friday.
Marburg disease has a fatality rate of up to 88% and belongs to the same virus family as Ebola. It is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and through contact with the body fluids of an infected person.
In new guidelines to stop the spread of Marburg disease, the Ministry of Health said no more than 50 people should attend the funeral of someone who died from Marburg disease.
An advisory released Sunday night said “normal business and other activities” could continue in the East African country.
However, he also urged the public to avoid close contact with “people with symptoms.” The ministry lists symptoms including fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhea.
This virus can be fatal through extreme blood loss.
According to Ministry of Health guidelines, inpatient visits will be prohibited for the next 14 days.
Guidelines state that patients can only have one caregiver with them at a time.
In many developing countries, patients' loved ones perform basic care tasks such as cleaning and feeding that are typically performed by nurses in other countries.
On Saturday, with the official death toll at six, Rwanda's health minister said most of the victims were health care workers in hospital intensive care units.
Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, director of Boston University's Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, told the BBC's Newsday program that while most reported cases have occurred in the densely populated capital, Kigali, previous outbreaks have often been in Kigali. He said it may be difficult to contain the spread of the virus because of the outbreak. In remote rural areas, they are easier to contain.
But there is hope, she added, because Rwanda has “a history of much better infrastructure and public health coordination than many other countries.”
Rwanda said it was ramping up contact tracing, surveillance and testing to stop the spread of infection.
The country's health minister said on Sunday that authorities were tracing around 300 people who had come into contact with a person infected with the Marburg virus.
Authorities urged the public to practice thorough hygiene, including frequent hand washing.
This is the first time that Marburg has been confirmed in Rwanda.
Neighboring Tanzania reported an outbreak in 2023, and Uganda reported three deaths in 2017.
