Bird flu outbreak at Vietnam zoo kills dozens of tigers
Dozens of tigers have died at a zoo in southern Vietnam after an outbreak of bird flu, state media said.
Since August, 47 tigers, as well as three lions and a leopard, have also been reported to have died from the virus.
The H5N1 outbreak hit Buong Xoai Zoo near Ho Chi Minh City and the neighboring My Inn Safari Park in Long An province.
Officials told Reuters that the man likely became ill after being fed infected chicken meat.
Vietnam's Ministry of Health said two samples taken from the dead tiger tested positive for avian influenza, and authorities were “tracing the source of the chicken to determine the cause.”
The zoo declined to comment when contacted by AFP.
Advice on the World Health Organization (WHO) website warns against consuming raw or undercooked meat and eggs from areas where bird flu is occurring, as the risk of infection is high.
The H5N1 strain of the virus primarily infects animals, and the WHO says most cases of human infection result from close contact with infected live or dead birds or contaminated environments.
Since 2022, there have been increasing reports of deadly outbreaks among mammals caused by influenza viruses, including H5N1.
Since 2003, nearly 900 human infections have been reported, more than half of which were fatal.
