The number of people in Scotland who say they suffer from a mental health condition has doubled in the past decade, with young people the most likely to be affected.

According to 2022 Census data, 11.3% of the population (about 1 in 9 people) reports symptoms that affect their mental health.

This increase from 232,900 to 617,100 people was the largest increase among various health conditions in the census.

Statistics show that younger people are more commonly reporting mental health conditions than older age groups, a reversal from 2011.

Among 16- to 24-year-olds, this figure is 15.4%, with women (20.4%) twice as likely as men to report poor mental health.

The results were even worse for those aged 25 to 34, with 17.5% reporting a mental health condition, and this figure rose to 21.2% for women.

The 2022 census comes after two years of disruption and lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic, which other studies have shown to be having an impact on mental health.

The latest census report says the results may reflect changes in people's willingness to report their health status and prevalence.

Certain conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and self-harm, have seen a clear increase in reporting over the past decade.

The report says increased demand for services may be driven in part by reduced stigma and increased awareness of mental health and wellbeing.

Other census results show that, taking age into account, 6.8% of the population will say they are in poor or very poor health in 2022, up from 5.9% in 2011.

According to the census, Glasgow council area had the highest proportion of people reporting poor or very poor health at 10.8%, while Aberdeenshire had the lowest at 4.2%.

Comparative figures for England and Wales show 5.4% of people reported being in poor or very poor health in the 2021 census, compared to 8.2% in Northern Ireland.

The census also recorded 627,700 people receiving unpaid care, an increase of 27.5% compared to the previous census in 2011.

Most unpaid carers are over 50 years old, and 58.8% are women.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
