Diseases affecting deer populations are on the rise across Michigan, officials say

(CBS Detroit) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says cases of animal-to-animal hemorrhagic disease are starting to increase and deer mortality is likely to be high.

As October begins, archery season begins, and hunters may come across deer carcasses. The disease outbreak affecting the animals is the worst in more than a decade, according to the DNR.

“We don't often see this level of disease this year,” said Chad Fedewa, acting deer specialist for the DNR Wildlife Division.

Epizootic hemorrhage is on the rise across the state, primarily affecting white-tailed deer. The DNR says there have been confirmed cases in 11 counties, with at least 2,000 deer infected.

“When infected with the virus, these deer develop a high fever and seek water to cool down. Once infected with the virus, they usually die within a few days,” Fedewa said.

This disease occurs every year, but this year the number of cases has increased. The midge fly, which is usually found in damp areas, transmits the disease.

We're hearing that “the majority of reports are coming from isolated areas within the county.”

Cases of the virus have been reported in southeastern Michigan, but the DNR has primarily confirmed cases in the southwest.

Pets and wildlife are not at risk, and the disease is not a threat to humans.

“Meat quality is not affected, there are no human health concerns from EHD, and it only affects deer,” Fedewa continued.
