Stroke patients talk about active use of AI during treatment
NHSOne stroke patient said the use of artificial intelligence during his hospital treatment was a “lifeline”.
Shaun Seff, a former postman from Canterbury, suffered a stroke after returning from holiday several years ago.
“I was making coffee and all of a sudden I knocked something over,” he said. “I couldn't concentrate well, so I knew something was wrong.”
The 55-year-old man was taken to Kent and Canterbury Hospital, where he underwent a brain scan using an AI decision support tool that allows doctors to quickly diagnose and treat strokes.
NHS England estimates that around two million brain cells can be lost every minute when someone has a stroke.
Medical experts say emergency treatment is “essential” for this reason.
NHS Mr Seff, a keen runner and gym goer, is starring in an NHS film about the use of AI in emergency stroke care.
He said, “I lost feeling in my hands and had trouble using my cell phone.”
He managed to contact his brother who dialed 999.
When he arrived at the hospital, his speech was slurred and he could not lift his arms.
Thanks to rapid, AI-powered treatment, he was able to walk again within weeks, he says.
“I feel very lucky,” he said. “I could have been in serious trouble.”
NHS England said it had been rolling out the technology across the county in the area of stroke treatment over the past few years.
Dr David Hargroves, stroke consultant and national clinical director for NHS England, said AI would enable faster image processing and interpretation.
This reduces the time it takes from the onset of stroke symptoms to treatment.
According to NHS England, AI technology has been linked to reducing this time by more than 60 minutes.
This correlates with a threefold increase in the number of stroke patients who recover with no disability or only mild disability, from 16% to 48%.
More than 1,200 people in east Kent suffer a stroke each year, according to East Kent Hospitals University Trust.
