Peterborough woman urged to get breast cancer screening
To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, NHS trusts are once again appealing to women to get breast cancer screenings, following a drop in the number of people taking them.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and the NHS offers free tests every three years to women aged 50 to 70.
North West Anglia Foundation Trust (NWAFT), which runs Peterborough City Hospital, Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Stamford Rutland Hospital, has issued a warning to women to be on the lookout for potential signs of cancer.
The trust says research shows that 1,300 women are saved in the UK each year through screening, which detects breast cancer at an early stage when it is too small to see or feel. .
According to NWAFT, 15,454 people were invited for screening in 2023-2024, but only 11,340 participated, and 125 of them were diagnosed with cancer.

She said: “It is important to raise awareness of breast cancer among women and men, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I urge anyone who has been invited to attend a breast cancer screening to keep their appointment.”

“Everyone is different in how they feel and look for changes, but remember to check the entire chest area, including the top of the chest and underarms. Women who have any concerns or changes should contact their GP first. We will refer you to a local breast specialist if necessary.
