Toronto Public Health confirms two cases of Listeria monocytogenes linked to ready-to-eat deli meat – CP24
Toronto Public Health has confirmed two cases of Listeria monocytogenes in the city believed to be linked to instant deli meat products sold by Summerhill Market.
The meat products have labels indicating they were packaged at 446 Summerhill Ave. and sold at various locations at Summerhill Market before Oct. 3, Public Health said.
The product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium that caused the illness in this case, the Department of Public Health said in a news release Friday.
The products were sold at locations including 446 Summerhill Avenue, 1054 Mount Pleasant Road, 484 Eglinton Avenue West, 1014 Bathurst Street, 3609 Dundas Street West, and 32 Wellington Street West.
Health officials warned that while the affected meat may not look or smell rotten, it can still cause illness.
“While TPH continues to investigate, residents are advised to immediately discard these sliced, ready-to-eat deli meat products or return them to the place of purchase,” Public Health said.
“Residents who have ingested these products are advised to discard them, watch for listeria symptoms, and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.”
People at high risk for listeriosis include the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. It is recommended to avoid high-risk foods that are easily contaminated, such as ready-to-eat meats, soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk, and raw fruits and vegetables.
Health officials say the median time between exposure to listeria and the onset of symptoms is usually two to three weeks, but it can take up to 70 days.
Listeriosis usually manifests as a mild flu-like illness. Symptoms may start suddenly and include vomiting, nausea, seizures, severe headache, constipation, and fever. More severe illness can cause meningitis and blood infections in newborns and older people.
Toronto Public Health is asking residents who are exhibiting signs and symptoms of Listeria infection to contact their local health care provider for testing and treatment.
