Third possible human case of bird flu confirmed in California – NBC Los Angeles
California health officials are investigating a possible third human case of bird flu, the California Department of Public Health announced Saturday.
This case was identified as an individual who had contact with infected dairy cows in the Central Valley.
It is unclear whether the person is linked or in contact with others Two people were confirmed to be infected on Thursday.. All three had contact with animals at three different farms.
California public health officials said samples from a possible third case were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further confirmation.
A third possible case experienced mild symptoms similar to the other cases, including conjunctivitis. All three were not hospitalized.
Public health authorities have also assured that pasteurized milk and dairy products are safe to consume as pasteurization inactivates the avian influenza virus.
While the risk to the general public remains low, livestock workers are encouraged to wear personal protective equipment, or PPE, such as N95 masks, face shields, goggles and gloves, Public Health said. .
