An increasing number of women under the age of 40 are being diagnosed with breast cancer. Possible reasons are:
BOSTON – More women under 40 are being diagnosed with breast cancer, and a Boston doctor shares possible reasons why the numbers continue to rise.
Increase in young breast cancer patients
Harry Goldstein has a history of cysts, so when he noticed a lump in his chest while taking a shower, he didn't think much of it.
“I'm going to get tested, but I wasn't too worried,” Goldstein said.
Within weeks, she was diagnosed with grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, a type of invasive breast cancer. She was only 29 years old.
“I think it was more of a shock than anything else,” Goldstein said.
Approximately 11% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are under the age of 40. And that number continues to grow, according to a recent report from the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Karen Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society, said, “The population under 50 is seeing a steeper increase than the population over 50.”
Steps women should take
“We believe that part of the increased risk of developing breast cancer in young women is due to reproductive patterns,” said Dr. Anne Partridge, a breast cancer specialist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. “Women are waiting until later to have their first child.”
Other potential causes include decreased physical activity, weight gain, and environmental factors.
“So my advice to young women is to know your breasts, to see your doctor if you notice any signs, symptoms or changes that are concerning, and to know your family history.” Partridge said. She also recommends that women start getting mammograms at least by age 40.
As for Harry's diagnosis, Partridge said he was optimistic about his prospects.
“I'm very optimistic about Harry and her treatment plan,” Ms Partridge said. “And in fact, the vast majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer, including young women with breast cancer, will survive the disease and go on to live well.”
“It can be frustrating at times because my life plans have almost completely gone off the rails, but I'm very grateful,” Goldstein said.
