Violent skunk spotted in Gloucester Township
(GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ) – The Camden County Health Department has been notified by the state Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) that a skunk found in Gloucester Township has tested positive for rabies.
Recently, a Gloucester Township resident's dog killed a skunk in his backyard. Gloucester Township animal control officers took possession of the skunk and arranged for it to be tested for rabies at the state Public Health and Environmental Laboratory (PHEL) in Trenton. On October 9, Camden County Health and Human Services was notified by PHEL that the animal had rabies.
Associated ACOs and dog owners in Gloucester Township have been notified. Camden County Health and Human Services has obtained the dog's vaccination certificate, he has received a booster rabies shot, and he will be kept under confinement and observation for 45 days.

“Rabies is a serious disease, but it is preventable with early treatment,” said Camden County Health Department Director Virginia Betteridge. “If you are bitten or scratched by a wild animal, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.”
Betteridge urged county residents to follow a few simple rules, including acting responsibly as pet owners.
- Keep all dogs, cats, and ferrets up to date on vaccinations.
- Please keep your pet under direct supervision to avoid contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary attention immediately.
- To remove stray animals from your neighborhood, contact your local animal control agency. They may not be vaccinated and can transmit diseases.
Betteridge said it's also important to avoid direct contact with unfamiliar animals.
- Enjoy wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, and foxes from afar. Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals in open garbage cans or litter boxes.
- Do not adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Do not attempt to nurse a sick animal back to health. Call animal control or an animal shelter for help.
- Teach your children that they should never handle unfamiliar animals, whether wild or domestic, even if they seem friendly.
- Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools, or similar locations where bats may come into contact with people or pets.
- When traveling abroad, avoid direct contact with wild animals and be especially careful around dogs in developing countries. Rabies is common in developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Tens of thousands of people die from rabies each year in these countries.
