Changes are now occurring in the way clinicians care for patients with Crohn's disease, thanks to a “game-changing” clinical trial.

Results from the PROFILE trial, published by Cambridge researchers earlier this year, helped set a new global standard in the treatment of lifelong conditions, doctors said.

The study showed that early monoclonal antibody therapy, a type of targeted drug therapy, is highly effective and a safer treatment for newly diagnosed patients than the current standard of care.

The profile included 386 newly diagnosed patients from 40 hospitals who were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups.

Each group was given a different treatment strategy.

The first group was treated with infliximab, a monoclonal antibody therapy used to treat several autoimmune diseases, as soon as possible after diagnosis.

The second group was treated using the traditional method of starting infliximab only when the disease has progressed and is unresponsive to other simpler treatments.

In the first group, 80% had both symptoms and inflammatory markers under control throughout the year, compared with 15% in the “traditional” treatment group.

In the group that received early effective treatment, 67% were ulcer-free at the end of the colonoscopy.

Patients who received early and effective treatment also had higher quality of life scores, used fewer steroids, had fewer serious infections, and had fewer hospitalizations.

Only 0.5% of the first group required emergency abdominal surgery, compared to 5% of the second group.
