Polio vaccine returns in Afghanistan, Pakistan after COVID-19 rest period
August 11 (UPI)-Pakistan and Afghanistan have resumed polio vaccination months after the campaign was interrupted by the COVID-19 outbreak a few months ago.
In March, the two countries stopped vaccination of children against polio and focused their efforts on the new crisis of coronaviruses. In the months since then, 34 cases of polio in Afghanistan and 63 cases in Pakistan have occurred, some previously in areas without polio.
UNICEF said the interruption delayed the polio vaccine in about 50 million children in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Poliovirus, which enters the body through the mouth with contaminated food and water, can cause illness and lead to paralysis and death. It was eliminated decades ago in the United States and most countries. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the last two countries in the world where the virus is naturally widespread.
“These life-saving vaccinations are important for children to avoid yet another emergency,” said Jean Gow, UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia. “The world has become so visible that the virus doesn’t know the borders, and no one is safe from polio until all the kids are safe.”
Mr Goff said he hopes that polio will be eradicated in Afghanistan and Pakistan among the problems brought by COVID-19.
“We promise to reach out to every child,” she said.
UNICEF said it had vaccinated about 800,000 children in Afghanistan and Pakistan through immunization efforts last month. The second round begins this month.
The polio vaccine was first developed in the 1950s.
