YWCA Evanston/North Shore reopens Thursday after Legionella bacteria clearance
CHICAGO (CBS) — The YWCA in Evanston will reopen Thursday, a week after being forced to close over two cases of Legionnaires' disease associated with the building.
“The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Environmental Health Team has confirmed that all necessary control measures are in place for a safe reopening, and the building will officially reopen to the public starting tomorrow, Thursday, October We will resume in-person programming on the 17th,” YWCA officials said Wednesday.
YWCA Evanston/North Shore building closed on October 10thThe outbreak comes after the local health department confirmed at least two positive cases of Legionnaires' disease related to exposure after Legionella bacteria was found in the hot water system that supplies water to the facility's sinks and showers.
Legionnaires' disease is a rare but serious illness caused by the Legionella bacteria that can cause pneumonia. It can be transmitted through inhalation of water vapor, but it cannot be transmitted from person to person.
No bacteria were detected in the YWCA's pool or in areas such as restrooms and fountains that are supplied solely by the cold water system.
Since the facility closed, YWCA officials have installed new 0.2 micron filters on all faucets and showers. YWCA says the filter kills 99.99999% of bacteria and is recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Temperatures in the facility's hot water tanks also briefly rose to between 140 and 150 degrees to ensure any bacteria in the water was killed. The hot water system temperature then returned to 140 degrees. This temperature is generally sufficient to inhibit the growth of Legionella bacteria.
Additionally, chlorine levels in swimming pools have been temporarily increased to enhance water purification for the next three months.
“The health and safety of all community members is our top priority and we can assure you that we are following all recommended guidelines and precautions to safely return to our facilities,” YWCA officials said in a statement. .
Meanwhile, the YWCA is working with a water treatment consultant to develop a long-term water treatment and maintenance plan.
The Evanston YWCA will reopen Thursday, but the fountain will be closed as a precaution until consultants determine it is safe to use. Water coolers are available to the public in the YWCA lobby and kitchen.
YWCA sinks, showers, pools, and restrooms are open and safe to use. All regular programs at the YWCA will also resume as normal on Thursday.
