Local surgeon outlines breast cancer treatment options, emphasizes early detection
HANNIBAL, Mo. (KHQA) — Most breast cancer patients require surgery. Dr. Patricia Hilner, a surgeon at Blessing Health Hannibal, outlines surgical treatment options and emphasizes the importance of early detection.
She says there are two standard options nationally. “It's either a lumpectomy, which removes the bad part, or a mastectomy, which removes one or both breasts. With a traditional mastectomy, a woman's breasts are left flat with no nipples.”
Dr. Hilner said advances in mastectomy treatment have now resulted in a procedure called nipple-sparing mastectomy. In this surgery, all breast tissue is removed under the skin, along with the cancer, leaving the patient with a nipple under which breast reconstruction is performed.
Most patients go home on the day of surgery. The biggest challenge is pain, and some patients may not be able to leave the hospital immediately.
Dr. Hilner said: This is why most patients with mastectomy, a major surgery, can be sent home thanks to the power of what we call a “local block.” This is the use of local anesthetics. It relieves a lot of the pain. It's surgery. it hurts. However, in the case of a local block, the pain is tolerable enough to go home. ”
Depending on a woman's cancer, she may need radiation therapy, medical oncology treatment, or both after surgery.
Being diagnosed with cancer is stressful, but Dr. Hilner has some advice.
“What I share with my patients is that depending on the stage of cancer, it is not the death sentence it once was. Most of these women will live a normal lifespan, and they will live long enough to see their children and grandchildren grow up.”
Dr. Hilner said the process can be difficult, but it's great to see patients push through it all.
“I know this is very difficult for women and it is my goal and desire to take the best care of them as if they were part of my family. As my patients, I see them many years after their initial diagnosis, and it's so nice to see them through the entire process.”
