Ozempic and similar drugs may lower risk of opioid and alcohol use disorder
New research published in scientific journal addiction People with opioid or alcohol use disorder (OUD, AUD) who take Ozempic or similar drugs to treat diabetes or weight-related symptoms have 40% lower rates of opioid overdose and lower rates of alcohol addiction. The rate was found to be 50% lower. People with OUD and AUD who are not taking Ozempic or similar medications.
Ozempic is one of several drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1 RAs, prescribed to treat diabetes, obesity, and other weight-related conditions. The drug interacts with an area of the brain (the mesolimbic system) to reduce appetite and cause a feeling of satisfaction after eating. The mesolimbic system overlaps with brain processes that govern addictive behaviors. This overlap suggests that GLP-1 RA and similar drugs may also alter reward response pathways associated with substance use. “Similar drugs” include glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) agonists, such as the weight loss drug Mounjaro.
To date, most of the existing research using GLP-1 RA and GIP to treat substance use disorders has consisted of animal studies and small clinical trials.
This new large human study included 503,747 people with a history of opioid use disorder (OUD), 8,103 of whom were prescribed a GLP-1 RA or GIP. This study found that OUD patients who received a prescription for a GLP-1 RA or GIP had a 40% lower rate of opioid overdose compared to patients who did not receive a prescription.
The study also looked at 817,309 people with a history of alcohol use disorder (AUD), of whom 5,621 were prescribed a GLP-1 RA or GIP. This study found that AUD patients who received a prescription for GLP-1 RA or GIP had a 50% lower rate of alcohol intoxication compared to patients without a prescription.
This research may introduce a promising new treatment for substance use disorders.
