'Think early' about osteoporosis risk, warns Bristol patient

Osteoporosis patients are calling on more people to address their risks much earlier in life, before it's too late.

Lisa Cole, 52, from Bristol, suffered a fracture in her 40s, but it wasn't linked to brittle bone disease until she finally had a bone density test.

The Royal Osteoporosis Society said there was a growing health crisis with rising rates of hospitalization and disability as the population aged.

The report recommends starting in your mid-30s by taking simple preventative measures such as vitamin D and calcium supplements, as well as regular weight-bearing exercise.

Mr. Cole is an optician who lives and works in Bristol. She first broke her ribs 10 years ago when she slipped in the pool.

Then I had a small fall and broke my elbow, but I still didn't think anything of it.

Then, after a severe wrist fracture, she was referred for a bone density scan and diagnosed with osteoporosis.

She always felt awkward and guilty about taking sick leave. It turned out that she had experienced early menopause, which can cause loss of bone density. She is currently taking medication.

“My hobby and passion is bouldering, which is a style of climbing, and I learned to do what I can,” Cole said.

“This is still a journey for me. I'm still breaking things down, but I'm talking to my doctor and getting support from those around me to get myself back in the right place,” she added.

A third of Britons, one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 are at risk of fractures due to osteoporosis, according to new research from the Bath-based Royal Osteoporosis Society. They say they don't know that it exists.

They believe that this lack of awareness is leading to “worsening health problems” and is a major cause of the increase in hospitalizations.

Craig Jones, chief executive of the association, said: “We recognize that bone health peaks much earlier than people think, peaking in your mid-30s and going downhill from there. There are very few people who do.”

“Lifestyle changes can help prevent osteoporosis, including vitamin D and calcium, but be aware that fractures after that age can be a factor.”

“There are really good anti-osteoporosis drugs available to keep bones strong for longer,” Jones reassured.

“It's never too early to start thinking about bone health. In fact, very few people think deeply about their bones at any point in their lives.”

To date, 49,000 people have received early diagnosis and access to medication after completing the three-minute ROS risk checker, which was introduced two years ago.
