Test of coronavirus-positive dogs killed by respiratory illness in North Carolina
According to health officials, the client arrived with a dog at the Veterinary Hospital of North Carolina State University on August 3. The dog showed signs of dyspnea earlier in the day.
The dog later died of the disease.
The client told the staff that a member of the family had previously tested positive for COVID-19 and later tested negative.

Samples collected from dogs were tested for SARS-CoV-2 virus and sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory for testing.
According to health officials, these tests confirmed positive results.
Necropsy was performed to determine the animal’s health at the time of death and the cause of death. The investigation is still ongoing.
“Based on available information, animals are considered to be at low risk of spreading the virus to people,” state public health veterinarian Dr. Carl Williams said in a news release.
