Bigfork woman shares her breast cancer experience

KALISPELL — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a ruling last month that requires mammography facilities to notify patients about breast density.

Women with dense breasts have a higher risk of developing cancer, and dense breast tissue makes it difficult for mammography to detect cancer.

Bigfork resident Cinda Raymond has had annual mammograms for decades. In late August, I received a call back from my doctor after a medical exam.

“Radiologists were concerned that the concentration was too high to get clear images,” Raymond said.
Cinda was called back to Logan Health for a breast MRI, which revealed areas of concern. Her doctor determined a biopsy was necessary.

“I had a biopsy, it went well, I'm sure it's going to be okay, right?” Then two days later they called me and told me it was cancer, which was a big surprise. ”

Cinda was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and had surgery to remove the cancer just two weeks later.

“The good thing is they caught it early and they caught it early,” Cinda said.

Her cancer was discovered thanks to an optional breast MRI scan. Because of the density of her breasts, her cancer did not show up on a mammogram.

“I'm grateful to the radiologist who told me I needed an MRI because that was the only way it would have been discovered,” Raymond said.

Scott Alexander, a mammography physician at Logan Health, explained that breast MRI is an advanced screening tool that helps find cancers hidden within dense tissue.

The MRI scan takes only 10 minutes.

“And the power of this test is pretty incredible, based on the dye we inject and the unusual areas that tend to glow with that dye. In Cinda's case, that's exactly what happened. That's something we couldn't see with normal experiments.''Screening mammography, diagnostic mammography, and even ultrasound do not show this area. That's thanks to breast MRI. ”

Cinda had no family history of breast cancer and was in good health when she was diagnosed with cancer.

“To be clear, most of the breast cancers we see occur in women with no family history, and about 75% are not at high risk. “That doesn't mean you shouldn't get a mammogram once a year,” Alexander says.

Cinda recommends that people with dense breast tissue get an MRI scan. Early detection saved her life.

“And I feel great. I feel wonderfully blessed to be able to come off the fence and get an MRI and find out, because if I had waited next year, it would have been a different story. It would have been.”
