Four farm workers 'presumptively positive' for bird flu, first case in Washington state
Washington State — The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) announced Sunday that four farmworkers have tested “presumptive positive” for avian influenza after handling infected chickens at a commercial egg farm in Franklin County.
According to the DOH, these are the first presumptive human cases under investigation in Washington state.
The incident is believed to have originated from a farm where approximately 800,000 chickens were euthanized after testing showed they were infected with avian influenza. The Washington State Department of Agriculture inspected the bird on October 15th.

The Benton-Franklin Health District (BFHD) conducted medical examinations of the exposed workers and coordinated testing at the Washington State Public Health Laboratory. The samples were forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for final virus confirmation and analysis.
The DOH said those who tested “presumptive positive” were experiencing mild symptoms and were receiving antiviral medication.
Washington state is the sixth state with confirmed cases of H5N1 in humans. H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is causing ongoing outbreaks in poultry, dairy cattle, and wildlife in multiple states.
