Anne Arundel County Schools Warns Parents About Rising Pertussis Cases

BALTIMORE — Anne Arundel County Public Schools is warning parents about an increase in pertussis cases. The district has identified three cases since September 10th.

This highly contagious respiratory disease spreads from person to person through the air. The number of pertussis, or whooping cough, cases reported this year is four times higher than in 2023, according to the CDC. Health officials say whooping cough can be life-threatening.

Symptoms include a low-grade fever, a runny nose, a cough that starts out mild but gets worse at night, and vomiting after coughing.

Dr. Esther Liu of the University of Maryland Baltimore-Washington Medical Center says whooping cough is preventable with a vaccine.

“Because pertussis is so contagious, we know that the number of people who are actually exposed to pertussis and gets sick is increasing,” Liu said. “As the number of people who get sick increases, so does the risk of complications from the disease. I think this is one of the biggest dangers of whooping cough.”
