Southern 7 reports two ticks have tested positive for the virus in Pulaski, Hardin County.
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) – Southern District 7 Health District reports two ticks have tested positive for Enrichosis virus.
Over the past few months, the department has been monitoring ticks in seven southernmost counties.

One tick collected in Pulaski County tested positive for Ehrlichia ewings, and one tick collected in Hardin County tested positive for Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the department said. Both ticks were Lone Star ticks.
In mid-October, IDPH reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the first tick in the state to test positive for Enrichia muris auclarensis, a bacteria transmitted by the black-legged tick, also known as the deer tick. The tick was found in Lake County.
“These viruses can cause very serious conditions for those who are bitten,” S7HD Environmental Health Director Miranda Adams said in a news release. “We want everyone to pay attention to early and late symptoms so that they can receive appropriate treatment before the disease becomes severe.”
The department said early signs and symptoms are usually mild or moderate and may include fever, chills, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, confusion and rash.
Some people are at risk of more severe illness, including people with weakened immune systems, children under 5, and people over 65.
S7HD provided some tips on how to avoid being bitten by a tick.
- Wear light-colored protective clothing and a head covering, such as a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, boots or sturdy shoes.
- Apply mothballs containing 10 percent to 30 percent DEET, primarily on clothing.
- Walk in the center of the sidewalk to avoid hitting weeds.
- Check yourself, others, and pets for ticks every 2 to 3 hours.
- Remove the tick immediately by grasping it with tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pulling it gently but firmly and straight up.
- Wash the bite area and hands thoroughly with soap and water and apply disinfectant to the bite area.
- Make sure the land surrounding your home is not attractive to ticks.
- Keep mowing the grass and weeding.
