One person contracted rabies from cat in Madison County
HAMILTON, N.Y. — A person in Madison County has contracted rabies from a cat, authorities said.
A stray black cat was found Sunday at Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, county spokeswoman Samantha Field said.
Field said the cat was tested on Monday and came back positive for rabies on Tuesday.
One person was “exposed” to the cat and is receiving treatment. Mr. Field would not say what kind of exposure it was.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rabies is a deadly viral disease that can be fatal if medical care is not sought before symptoms appear.
Officials are asking anyone who has had contact with a black cat in the Seven Oaks Golf Course area after October 10, 2024 to call the Madison County Public Health Department at 315-366-2361.
