ADPH issues rabies alert after kitten tests positive in Auburn
LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WTVM) – A stray kitten in Auburn has tested positive for rabies, and another potentially infected kitten is still roaming the area, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. There is a possibility that
Officials said the incident occurred in an area off East Longleaf Drive within city limits.
Officials said they were informed that one litter of infected kittens was not captured. Other littermates are also being tested.
The Alabama Department of Public Health is also working to identify anyone who may have been infected, including the person who brought the kitten to the veterinary clinic and their staff.
Officials are recommending that anyone who may have come into contact with a nearby stray kitten seek medical attention as a preventative measure. We also recommend taking the following precautions to avoid potential exposure:
- Do not leave your pet unattended. Keep them within a fenced area or on a leash.
- Do not leave pet food or debris near your residence.
- Do not illegally feed wild animals or keep them as pets.
- Avoid approaching wild or domestic animals that are behaving strangely or abnormally.
- Regardless of their behavior, remind children to stay away from stray and wild animals.
ADPH also urges residents to vaccinate their pets.
“People should follow examples like this and continue to vaccinate their pets before something like this happens.
