Rwanda identifies first case of current Marburg virus outbreak
Rwanda's Minister of Health, Sabin Nsanzimana, acknowledged in a press conference on October 24 that the virus that started the outbreak originated in animals.

The person sought treatment at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, where he was first diagnosed and treated for malaria, and it was only later that Marburg disease was discovered. By then, the infection had spread to his close contacts and several medical staff.

Nsanzimana said mining activities at the site associated with the index case have been suspended and public health authorities are tracing those who worked at the mine. “Our current focus is to prevent the cave-dwelling fruit bats from coming into contact with humans,” he told the Oct. 24 meeting.

Analysis showed that these viral sequences were closely related, and four of them were identical, indicating that the virus spread rapidly over a short period of time, he wrote. In the same X thread, Butera also said that all sequences analyzed share a single zoonotic origin, suggesting a single jump from bats to humans.
Another finding was that the currently circulating virus shares a common ancestor with the Marburg virus strain that was circulating in 2014. The strain responsible for Rwanda's ongoing outbreak “shows a limited mutation rate, which is a good sign,” Butera wrote.
So far, more than 1,200 people in Japan, including medical workers and close contacts of infected people, have been vaccinated with the Marburg virus vaccine. Public health authorities are also using therapeutics to treat infected people, including the antiviral drug remdesivir and an monoclonal antibody called MBP091. As of October 23, 46 people have recovered and two infected people are currently isolated and receiving treatment.
