The kitten tested positive for rabies in Oneida County. Exposure to multiple adults and other pets
Kittens tested positive for rabies in the city of Rome, according to the Oneida County Health Department.
The kitten was sent to the State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center Institute in Albany for inspection on Thursday and a positive result was reported on Friday, According to the Roman sentry.
A person from the Oneida County Department of Health said several adults and pets were exposed to kittens and were being treated appropriately. No further information was given about kittens or how other people or animals were exposed.
The Department of Health has provided the following advice on rabies and animals (including pets):
*The signs of rabies are: Crazy animal acting; animals shy-animals may approach abnormally. Drooling or foaming from the mouth.
*If anyone sees a wild or stray animal that shows these signs, do not approach or approach the animal. If the animal behaves strangely, ask your local animal caretaker for help.
*Residents are strongly advised to stay away from strangers. For the safety of pets and the convenience of county residents, the Oneida County Department of Health offers rabies vaccination clinics throughout the year in various regional locations.
Vaccination recommendations for pets:
• All cats, dogs, and ferrets over 3 months must be vaccinated against rabies, even indoors.
• Dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies at the age of 3 months, 1 year, and then every 3 years.
• Ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies each year.
