ADPH investigates possible rabies exposure after stray kitten found in Tuskegee tests positive
Tuskegee, Alabama (W.S.F.A.) – Alabama Department of Public Health Investigators are continuing to investigate whether a stray kitten found on a university campus may have exposed people to rabies.
According to ADPH, a kitten was abandoned on the Tuskegee University campus. The kittens were taken to a veterinary clinic in Auburn, where one of the kittens became ill and was tested for rabies.
One kitten tested positive for rabies, and three more tested negative, state health department officials said.
Authorities say someone took one of the kittens to Georgia. ADPH officials are working with Georgia public health officials and were able to identify the person who adopted the kitten from Alabama. The kitten is currently being monitored at a veterinary hospital in Georgia.
ADPH is investigating whether there are any other kittens that have yet to be found.
Officials say people who came into contact with the kitten have received preventive vaccinations. The state health department cannot release additional information about those infected due to privacy concerns.
ADPH officials are working with Tuskegee University to investigate the situation.
Rabies is transmitted through bites, scratches, or exposed mucous membranes from infected animals. Other people are not at risk of contracting the virus.
Alabama law requires that dogs, cats, and ferrets over 12 weeks of age be vaccinated against rabies.
