Iowa resident who traveled to West Africa dies, suspected to have Lassa fever
Health officials are investigating Monday's death of an Iowa resident as a suspect. For Lassa fevera deadly viral disease rarely seen in the United States, health officials said.
The patient returned to the United States from West Africa earlier this month. Officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the risk to passengers on the plane was “extremely low” because the person was not sick during the trip. The virus is not spread by casual contact, and patients are not thought to be contagious before symptoms appear.
The patient was admitted to the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center in isolation. Testing early Monday morning by the Nebraska Laboratory Response Network determined the patient was presumed positive for Lassa fever. If the results are confirmed, the Iowa case would be the ninth known case of Lassa fever in a traveler returning to the United States from an area where Lassa fever has been detected since 1969.
The CDC is helping Iowa health officials identify people who came into contact with the patient after symptoms developed. Symptoms are usually mild and include fever, fatigue, and headache. Some people may experience vomiting, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, and pain in the back, chest, or abdomen.
Those identified as close contacts will be monitored for 21 days.
State and local health officials are working to determine how the patient, who has not been identified, became infected. Initial information suggests that the patient came into contact with rodents in West Africa. The virus is carried by rodents and spread to humans through contact with the urine or feces of infected animals. In rare cases, it can be transmitted between people through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an ill person, through mucous membranes, or through sexual contact.
Lassa fever infects approximately 100,000 to 300,000 people in West Africa each year and causes approximately 5,000 deaths.
