Colorado COVID: Contact Tracking Scam Requests Credit Card Information
Boulder County health officials said staff would provide guidance on quarantine and inspection during contact tracking.
Boulder County, Colorado—The Boulder County Public Health Department (BCPH) warns people about a new contact tracking scam.
BCPH said it received multiple reports of scams, including phone calls from those who claimed to have contact tracking for COVID-19. During the reported call, residents were asked to provide a credit card number to purchase the test and were told they would have to take the COVID-19 test within 72 hours.
The Health Department said:
- Please do not request any kind of payment.
- Do not ask for your Social Security number.
- Do not request proof of residence.
- Do not require testing without first discussing personal exposure.
Carole Hellwig, BCPH Infectious Diseases Program Coordinator, said: “The purpose of the contact tracing call is to understand how COVID-19 is affecting the community and to find out how people were exposed so they could prevent others from being infected. .”
The BCPH says that if someone is positive, they will contact the public to learn and provide guidance on:
- People who were contacted during the infection.
- What were their symptoms?
- If you need help.
- Demographic details such as race/ethnicity.
The BCPH said it would provide guidance on quarantine and testing if it contacts people who have not been tested positive but may be in close contact.
“To slow the spread of this virus, being open and honest with the staff is essential,” Helwig said. “We don’t want to dissuade residents from talking to us on these fake phones. Residents are advised to contact the Boulder County District Attorney’s Area Conservation Division at 303-441-3700 if contacted by anyone who has been described as a contact tracer seeking financial or personal non-health related information. It is recommended.
