EEE-positive mosquitoes found in Stonington, Connecticut
Last year, there were four confirmed human cases of EEE in Connecticut. Three people died.
Stonington, Connecticut — EEE was detected again in Connecticut. Experts consider early detection of mosquito seasons to be a cause for concern.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus or EEE was detected in mosquitoes sampled in Stonington on August 5.
“It was terrifying to hear some cases, and some stories are,” Samantha Mendello said.
Mendelo remembers the rigors of last year’s EEE season. She wasn’t trying to fly bag spray for her afternoon hike at the Pafar Woods Nature Reserve in Stonington.
“It’s a precaution you should always take when going outdoors in a forest of water,” said Medelo.
Still water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Therefore, wetlands east of the Connecticut River tend to be the most active. This detection will take place a few weeks earlier than expected and at about the same time as last year.
“Usually, I don’t think the EEE virus will emerge until late August,” said Dr. Philip Armstrong, director of the Connecticut Mosquito Monitoring Program.
EEE was detected in 28 communities throughout the state in 2019. 4 people got the virus. Three of them died. EEE is the most serious mosquito epidemic in the United States, killing about 33% of people infected with the virus, while most survivors have serious brain damage.
Mosquitoes are already showing EEE positivity in New York and New Jersey. A person who is positive for the virus in Massachusetts.
“It’s usually found that the virus persists for several years after it was introduced,” Dr. Armstrong said.
Experts ask that you start taking precautions to prevent bites by applying insect repellent and covering the exposed areas as the dusk rolls. Mosquitoes infected with EEE tend to be most active from dusk to dawn.
“The fact that we know it’s here, we’re just going to watch, catch mosquitoes, and continue to study the spread of the virus further,” Dr. Armstrong said. “It will really guide our actions for the rest of the summer.”
West Nile virus has also been detected in parts of the state, but it has not yet been transmitted to humans. These detections were made primarily in Fairfield County. Detections were also made in Hartford and New Haven counties.
To reduce the risk of mosquito bites, you need to do the following:
- Minimize the time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- • Make sure the door and window screens fit properly and are properly repaired.
