Six young Kentucky people known to have a rare but serious MIS-C associated with a coronavirus
State records have confirmed six rare coronavirus-related inflammatory conditions in young Kentucky since March.
Case data suggests that the syndrome is overly affecting young people of color.
MIS-C, or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, has been identified in Kentucky between the ages of 5 and 19. Rarely, symptoms of serious conditions include inflammation of multiple body parts, fever, rash, and vomiting. The cause of MIS-C is unknown, but linked to the new coronavirus.
All six cases treated in the MIS-C clinic at Norton Children’s Hospital have recovered, said Brian Holland, a director of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Louisville and a member of the clinic.
The treatment was effective, but the Netherlands warned that children diagnosed with MIS-C face a painful battle. He said some needed a ventilator or specialized IV.
“The children we treated are really sick,” Holland said. “Without treatment, I don’t know how ill they were.”
The racial and ethnic disparities in the state’s MIS-C case exacerbate the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on color communities. Of the six MIS-C cases in Kentucky, two were black, two were Hispanic/Latino, one was non-Hispanic/Latino, “unknown”, and only one was identified as white.
In Kentucky, 15% of COVID deceased individuals are identified as black, according to state health data, which is about twice the state’s black population. About 13% of all cases of COVID have been confirmed to be Hispanic, more than three times the total Hispanic population in the state.

The condition of these patients is unknown. The state does not publish information about the county or COVID status of MIS-C patients for protection under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Researchers are just beginning to study the nature and long-term effects of MIS-C, but they are largely unknown. For example, it is unclear if the hospital diagnoses only the most severe cases of MIS-C. The Netherlands said patients in the MIS-C clinic appeared to develop symptoms 3 to 6 weeks after coronavirus infection.
